A bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It is an escape from our hectic everyday lives. Not only should one’s bedroom be a refuge, but it should also be a sanctuary. Creating such a place isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Although there are many decorating and design aspects involved, placing particular emphasis on your bedroom will improve every aspect of your life. You’ll be able to relax much more quickly at the end of the day, and getting up in the morning won’t be quite as much of a chore.
If you are lucky enough to begin with an empty bedroom, carefully consider the look you would like to achieve. As was stated earlier, you want to create a space you feel comfortable in, but what exactly does comfortable mean for you? Some people feel most relaxed in a bedroom with soft tones and large furniture and accessories. Perhaps you long for a huge four-poster bed covered in an array of fluffy pillows. Similarly, others feel more at ease in a brightly colored room designed with simple lines. There is not right or wrong answer when it comes to personal taste. If you have a significant other it is very important to consider his or her needs as well. After all, this bedroom will be their refuge as well.
Once you’ve figured out what color-scheme and feel you are going for, it’s time to translate that into furniture and accessories. Although it’s not a decorative piece, one’s mattress cannot be underestimated. Nothing affects one’s sleep the way a mattress does. If you do not get good nights sleep, you will not be able to function properly the next day. This will affect both your mood and your productivity. Studies have even shown that not having enough sleep impacts the length of one’s life. For this reason, it is paramount to buy a quality mattress. Your new mattress should be comfortable, but not too soft. It should have high-quality springs and thick padding throughout.
Another thing to carefully consider is your bedroom furniture. There are a ton of choices available. It doesn’t matter if you seek the comforting tone of traditional cherry wood, or if you seek the simple styling of black metal. Anything you choose must be a reflection of your personal style and be functional as well. Be sure that your bedroom furniture allows for the appropriate amount of storage for clothing, bedding and other things such as books and decorative items. This storage should hide enough of your essentials so that the room looks and feels uncluttered. You can even use the space underneath your bed for extra room.
No matter what furniture, paint or flooring you may choose for your bedroom, be sure that it all creates a certain flow. The trick to creating a calming space is to make sure that everything works well together. No one piece should outshine the other. For instance, your walls shouldn’t be so bold that they take a person’s attention away from the rest of the room. In the end, however, anything you choose should be a strong reflection of what you (and your spouse) likes and enjoys. A bedroom is the place where you dream, so why wouldn’t you make it as dream-worthy as possible?
